How Nottingham start-ups are breeding a new era of culture and creativity

It is no secret that Nottingham has made a name for itself in recent years for its commitment to creativity, technology and the digital world.
With two of the country’s largest Universities, low living costs, lots of ambitious young talent and great links to larger cities, Nottingham is fast becoming a desirable location for new businesses and creatives alike.
Nottingham currently has over 19,000 people working within a digital role and has 241 startup births in addition to the tech sector growth potential of 81%. Add into the mix Nottingham’s Creative Quarter (CQ), and it is no wonder that the city is thriving in a creative and digital capacity.
The Creative Quarter is an economic development agency whose purpose is to facilitate the creation, protection, and attraction to Nottingham, of jobs and to support an increase in productivity and Gross Value Added (GVA) in the creative and digital industries.
Nottingham is currently seeing an £835 million Digital GVA creating plenty of potential for new jobs in the city within the creative and technology sector.
Susan Hallam MBE, Founder of digital marketing agency Hallam and Chair of the Cultural Quarter, said, “We don’t just want one section of the city to be creative, we need to be a creative city as a whole and that is what the Creative Quarter is currently championing.
“It would be great to see more of our local businesses continue to expand and thrive as much as the other large firms that are based here, such as Capital One, Boots and Experian.”
As part of the drive to give Nottingham the recognition it deserves in the digital industry, Hallam will be hosting the Nottingham Digital Summit later this year which is a unique charity fundraising event, with all fees being donated to the Samaritans of Nottingham.
The annual event, which is the biggest of its kind in the East Midlands, will be held at The Nottingham Playhouse and Albert Hall on 3rd July and is expected to attract over 700 delegates.
